Senior AI Expert (m/f/d)

for AI Computing Services

Your Role and Responsibilities:

  • Taking over a role of senior responsibilities in the research activities of LRZ’s BDAI team, addressing the enhancement of current and development of future LRZ AI service offers. Here you will be initiating and contributing to research projects, their preparation, applications for funding and execution, including collaborations with national and European partners and project consortia
  • Fostering contact with academic user communities by relying on your friendly personality, you will be providing consultancy to and collaborating with scientific users and research groups working on the forefront of AI
  • Cooperating in a highly motivated, international team, including mentorship for junior team members, within a friendly and open work environment, with plenty of opportunities to develop your own ideas and interacting with students in training and teaching activities
  • Shaping and actively driving ideas for scientific and infrastructure research projects with access to latest AI and high-performance computing hardware (GPUs, CPUs, AI accelerators, etc.)
  • Advising researchers and academic users of an ever-growing AI service infrastructure in order to foster and to optimize their system usage (e.g. efficiency, multi-GPU and multi-node scalability). Backing a dedicated support team by providing second- and third-level support to these user groups relying on direct contact with technology providers and developers (hardware/software)

Basic Qualifications:

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  •  PhD in computer or data science, or other areas of scientific computing, with additional two or more years of research-oriented applied AI development (models, systems, workflows, etc.) and, ideally, leadership experience in research/enterprise environments or a Master’s degree in the same areas with additional five or more years of comparable experience.

Other Requirements

  • Proven experience with applications to third-party calls for funding, grant program structures as well as project management and reporting duties, ideally in a responsible role
  • Extensive knowledge about and practical skills applying Machine Learning/AI applications, frameworks (e.g. Python, PyTorch, JAX, etc.), methods and models (e.g. model (pre-)training, fine-tuning, inference pipelines, etc.)
  • Willingness and ambition to keep up with current developments and to learn new technologies in the field of AI 
  • Proficiency working with data center software environments (incl. Linux and tools like Git, GitLab)
  • Excellent English and/or German writing and presentation skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with EU projects in an active role (ideally including the application phase)
  • Good knowledge in configuring/working with (virtualized) software environments for machine learning / AI / data analytics research, e.g. containers (Docker etc.) and/or package managers (uv, pip,Conda etc.), as well as CI/CD
  • Experience in working with/on high performance cluster systems (e.g. using workload/resource manager systems, parallel file systems, parallel model training) or large-scale cloud systems targeting machine learning / AI / data analytics workloads
  • Knowledge in some additional emergent aspects of AI, for instance AI ethics, regulated, secure, reliable and trustworthy AI, AI agents, multimodal AI, model customization, etc.

Term of the contract

4 years, further employment is intended, with the possibility of conversion to long-term status.

up to E 13, see Entgelttabelle TV-L

Overtime is compensated by additional time off
