IT-System Developer in Research Data Management (m/f/d)

Your Role and Responsibilities:

Petabytes of data of our users are waiting to be properly managed and made publicly available according to the FAIR Principles of modern Research Data Management (RDM). You will make this possible:

  • You will participate in the development of IT systems and metadata workflows (conversion, validation, etc.) for RDM at a Supercomputing Centre, with focus on Python scripting. This will help users that cannot transfer TBs of data into common, medium-sized research data repositories.
  • In the transregional project TRR356 on plant-microbe interaction, you will work on 

- administration & enhancement of a gitlab-based RDM system for omics and imaging,

- data publication workflows from this RDM system to the university libraries,

- data analysis workflows and connectivity,

- integration of new data products or even entire databases, and

- support for data steward and users in using the system, including educational courses.

  • In the InHPC-DE Project, you will contribute to 

- implementing data publication directly from supercomputing storage,

- harmonisation of metadata handling for datasets at the GCS supercomputing centres,

- automating publication of these (meta-)data via data portals (similar to www.zenodo.org) and search engines, and

- enhancing, testing or maintaining data-transfer tools and methods.

  • You will work with the LRZ Research Data Management Team (part of LRZ Research) and with our colleagues operating LRZ storage, and help to support team and our users. You will be part of a stimulating environment around German National Research Data Infrastructure projects (Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur, NFDI) and international collaborations.
Basic Qualifications:
  • master’s degree (with thesis) or PhD in computer science, engineering or any natural science – or equivalent;
  • system management and scripting:

- several years of experience with Linux and fluency on the Linux Command Line (bash),

- fluency in at least one further programming/scripting language (preferably Python),

- basic familiarity with NFS;

  • familiarity with source code management using git / GitLab / GitHub; basic knowledge of CI/CD;
  • C1-level knowledge of English; at least A2-level knowledge of German;
  • interest in data management;
  • basic experience in software engineering; and
  • ability and dedication to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • experience with virtualisation frameworks (e.g. OpenStack, Docker);
  • knowledge in (research) data management; and
  • experience in HPC, scientific computing, or data science.
